How to Find the Right Therapist: A Step-by-Step Guide
Do you find yourself looking for a therapist but aren't sure which one to choose? Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the options? Have you been putting off booking a session because the decision feels like too much?
If so, you're not alone—and I'm here to help. This step-by-step guide will help make the process feel a little less overwhelming.
Sometimes, large and daunting tasks become much more manageable when we break them down into bite-sized steps. So, let's get started!
1. Know Your "Why"
I know, I know—the "why" question comes up all the time but hear me out. Understanding your "why" is one of the most important steps in finding the right therapist.
Ask yourself:
Why am I seeking therapy right now?
What challenges am I hoping to work through?
What are my goals for therapy?
Once you've answered these questions, you're already one step closer to finding a therapist who's the right fit for you.
2. Think About What Else You're Looking For
Beyond your reasons for seeking therapy, consider what qualities are important to you.
For example:
Would you prefer a therapist of a certain gender, race, or religion?
Are you looking for in-person or virtual therapy?
Have you tried certain therapy approaches that weren't a good fit, and would like to try something different?
Taking a few minutes to think about these preferences can help narrow your search. Perhaps you’re looking for a female therapist that specializes in trauma work, or dyslexia support that provides the convivence of offering virtual or phone sessions. If so, HB Integrative Therapy might be the right fit!
3. Start Your Search
Now for the fun part—it's time to start looking!
Search for therapists whose specialties align with your "why" and who meet the preferences you've identified. There will likely be quite a few options, but don't worry—we'll narrow them down.
You can find therapists through directories like Psychology Today, by asking ChatGPT for recommendations, or by doing a quick Google search using terms like "therapist near me" or "virtual therapist."
4. Narrow It Down
Once you've found a few therapists who seem like a good fit, take some time to explore their websites (if they have one).
Not every therapist has a website, but I think a well-designed website can really help someone stand out. It gives you a sense of their personality, their approach to therapy, and the types of clients they work with.
Fun fact: After scrolling through countless therapist profiles, I actually chose my own therapist because of her website! It helped me get a much better sense of who she was before booking.
5. Book Your First Session
Now it's time to take the next step and book your appointment!
Some therapists offer free consultation calls before your first session. Sometimes they're optional, and sometimes they're required.
Personally, I don't offer free consultations because I don't believe it's possible to know whether a therapist is the right fit based on a 10–15-minute conversation. Instead, I prefer to get to know clients during our first full session, where there's enough time to get to know one another a bit more.
That said, if consultation calls help you feel more comfortable, there's absolutely nothing wrong with scheduling one if it’s offered. Do whatever feels right for you.
Congratulations!
You did it—you booked your first therapy session!
Starting therapy is a big step, and it takes courage. Whether you're feeling excited, nervous, or somewhere in between, I hope you take a moment to acknowledge what you've accomplished.
Be proud of yourself. This is your first win on your healing journey.
